Why Washington hates Hugo Chavez
Mark Crispin Miller <markcrispinmiller @gmail.com> Jan 02 05:30PM -0500 ^

*Why Washington Hates Hugo Chavez*

*By Mike Whitney*
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article27170.htm

*January 01, 2010 "Information Clearing House"* -- In late November,
Venezuela was hammered by torrential rains and flooding that left 35
people dead and roughly 130,000 homeless. If George Bush had been
president, instead of Hugo Chavez, the displaced people would have been
shunted off at gunpoint to makeshift prison camps--like the
Superdome--as they were following Hurricane Katrina. But that's not the
way Chavez works. The Venezuelan president quickly passed "enabling"
laws which gave him special powers to provide emergency aid and housing
to flood victims. Chavez then cleared out the presidential palace and
turned it into living quarters for 60 people, which is the equivalent of
turning the White House into a homeless shelter. The disaster victims
are now being fed and taken care of by the state until they can get back
on their feet and return to work.

The details of Chavez's efforts have been largely omitted in the US
media where he is regularly demonized as a "leftist strongman" or a
dictator. The media refuses to acknowledge that Chavez has narrowed the
income gap, eliminated illiteracy, provided health care for all
Venezuelans, reduced inequality, and raised living standards across he
board. While Bush and Obama were expanding their foreign wars and
pushing through tax cuts for the rich, Chavez was busy improving the
lives of the poor and needy while fending off the latest wave of US
aggression.

Washington despises Chavez because he is unwilling to hand over
Venezuela's vast resources to corporate elites and bankers. That's why
the Bush administration tried to depose Chavez in a failed coup attempt
in 2002, and that's why the smooth-talking Obama continues to launch
covert attacks on Chavez today. Washington wants regime change so it can
install a puppet who will hand over Venezuela's reserves to big oil
while making life hell for working people.

Recently released documents from Wikileaks show that the Obama
administration has stepped up its meddling in Venezuela's internal
affairs. Here's an excerpt from a recent post by attorney and author,
Eva Golinger:

"In a secret document authored by current Deputy Assistant Secretary of
State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Craig Kelly, and sent by the US
Embassy in Santiago in June 2007 to the Secretary of State, CIA and
Southern Command of the Pentagon, along with a series of other US
embassies in the region, Kelly proposed "six main areas of action for
the US government (USG) to limit Chavez's influence" and "reassert US
leadership in the region".

Kelly, who played a primary role as "mediator" during last year's coup
d'etat in Honduras against President Manuel Zelaya, classifies President
Hugo Chavez as an "enemy" in his report.

"Know the enemy: We have to better understand how Chavez thinks and what
he intends...To effectively counter the threat he represents, we need to
know better his objectives and how he intends to pursue them. This
requires better intelligence in all of our countries". Further on in the
memo, Kelly confesses that President Chavez is a "formidable foe", but,
he adds, "he certainly can be taken". (Wikileaks: Documents Confirm US
Plans Against Venezuela, Eva Golinger, Postcards from the Revolution)

The State Department cables also show that Washington has been funding
anti-Chavez groups in Venezuela through non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) that pretend to be working for civil liberties, human rights or
democracy promotion. These groups hide behind a facade of legitimacy,
but their real purpose is to topple the democratically elected Chavez
government. Obama supports this type of subversion just as
enthusiastically as did Bush. The only difference is the Obama team is
more discreet. Here's another clip from Golinger with some of the
details on the money-trail:

"In Venezuela, the US has been supporting anti-Chavez groups for over 8
years, including those that executed the coup d'etat against President
Chavez in April 2002. Since then, the funding has increased
substantially. A May 2010 report evaluating foreign assistance to
political groups in Venezuela, commissioned by the National Endowment
for Democracy, revealed that more than $40 million USD annually is
channeled to anti-Chavez groups, the majority from US agencies....

Venezuela stands out as the Latin American nation where NED has most
invested funding in opposition groups during 2009, with $1,818,473 USD,
more than double from the year before....Allen Weinstein, one of NED's
original founders, revealed once to the Washington Post, "What we do
today was done clandestinely 25 years ago by the CIA?" (America's Covert
"Civil Society Operations": US Interference in Venezuela Keeps Growing",
Eva Golinger, Global Research)

On Monday, the Obama administration revoked the visa of Venezuela's
ambassador to Washington in retaliation for Chávez's rejection of
nominee Larry Palmer as American ambassador in Caracas. Palmer has been
openly critical of Chavez saying there were clear ties between members
of the Chavez administration and leftist guerrillas in neighboring
Colombia. It's a roundabout way of accusing Chavez of terrorism. Even
worse, Palmer's background and personal history suggest that his
appointment might pose a threat to Venezuela's national security.
Consider the comments of James Suggett of Venezuelanalysis on Axis of Logic:

"Take a look at Palmer's history, working with the U.S.-backed oligarchs
in the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Sierra Leone, South
Korea, Honduras, "promoting the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA)." Just as the U.S. ruling class appointed an African-American,
Barack Obama to replace George W. Bush with everything else intact,
Obama in turn, appoints Palmer to replace Patrick Duddy who was involved
in the attempted coup against President Chávez in 2002 and an enemy of
Venezuelans throughout his term as U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela."

Venezuela is already crawling with US spies and saboteurs. They don't
need any help from agents working inside the embassy. Chavez did the
right thing by giving Palmer the thumbs down.

The Palmer nomination is just "more of the same"; more interference,
more subversion, more trouble-making. The State Dept was largely
responsible for all of the so-called color-coded revolutions in Ukraine,
Lebanon, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan etc; all of which were cookie cutter,
made-for-TV events that pitted the interests of wealthy capitalists
against those of the elected government. Now Hillary's throng want to
try the same strategy in Venezuela. It's up to Chavez to stop them,
which is why he's pushed through laws that "regulate, control or
prohibit foreign funding for political activities". It's the only way he
can defend against US meddling and protect Venezuelan sovereignty.

Chavez is also using his new powers to reform the financial sector.
Here's an excerpt from an article titled "Venezuelan National Assembly
Passes Law Making Banking a "Public Service":

"Venezuela's National Assembly on Friday approved new legislation that
defines banking as an industry "of public service," requiring banks in
Venezuela to contribute more to social programs, housing construction
efforts, and other social needs while making government intervention
easier when banks fail to comply with national priorities."...

The new law protects bank customers' assets in the event of
irregularities on the part of owners... and stipulates that the
Superintendent of Banking Institutions take into account the best
interest of bank customers - and not only stockholders... when making
any decisions that affect a bank's operations."

So why isn't Obama doing the same thing? Is he too afraid or is he just
Wall Street's lackey? Here's more from the same article:

"In an attempt to control speculation, the law limits the amount of
credit that can be made available to individuals or private entities by
making 20% the maximum amount of capital a bank can have out as credit.
The law also limits the formation of financial groups and prohibits
banks from having an interest in brokerage firms and insurance companies.

The law also stipulates that 5% of pre-tax profits of all banks be
dedicated solely to projects elaborated by communal councils. 10% of a
bank´s capital must also be put into a fund to pay for wages and
pensions in case of bankruptcy.

According to 2009 figures provided by Softline Consultores, 5% of
pre-tax profits in Venezuela's banking industry last year would have
meant an additional 314 million bolivars, or $73.1 million dollars, for
social programs to attend the needs of Venezuela's poor majority."
http://venezuelanalysis.com/news/5880

"Control speculation"? Now there's a novel idea. Naturally, opposition
leaders are calling the new laws "an attack on economic liberty". But
that's pure baloney. Chavez is merely protecting the public from the
predatory practices of bloodthirsty bankers. Most Americans wish that
Obama would do the same thing.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "Chávez has threatened to
expropriate large banks in the past if they don't increase loans to
small-business owners and prospective home buyers, this time he is
increasing the pressure publicly to show his concern for the lack of
sufficient housing for Venezuela's 28 million people."

Caracas suffers from a massive housing shortage that's gotten much worse
because of the flooding. Tens of thousands of people need shelter now,
which is why Chavez is putting pressure on the banks to lend a hand. Of
course, the banks don't want to help so they've slipped into crybaby
mode. But Chavez has shrugged off their whining and put them "on
notice". In fact, on Tuesday, he issued this terse warning:

"Any bank that slips up?I'm going to expropriate it, whether it's Banco
Provincial, or Banesco or Banco Nacional de Crédito."
Bravo, Hugo. In Chavez's Venezuela the basic needs of ordinary working
people take precedent over the profiteering of cutthroat banksters. Is
it any wonder why Washington hates him?

small-business owners and prospective home buyers, this time he is
increasing the pressure publicly to show his concern for the lack of
sufficient housing for Venezuela’s 28 million people.”

Caracas suffers from a massive housing shortage that’s gotten much worse
because of the flooding. Tens of thousands of people need shelter now,
which is why Chavez is putting pressure on the banks to lend a hand. Of
course, the banks don’t want to help so they’ve slipped into crybaby
mode. But Chavez has shrugged off their whining and put them “on
notice”. In fact, on Tuesday, he issued this terse warning:

“Any bank that slips up?I’m going to expropriate it, whether it’s Banco
Provincial, or Banesco or Banco Nacional de Crédito.”
Bravo, Hugo. In Chavez’s Venezuela the basic needs of ordinary working
people take precedent over the profiteering of cutthroat banksters. Is
it any wonder why Washington hates him?

http://usacoup.scoop.co.nz/?p=966

Michael Collins

(Wash. DC) In 2004, we were told to anticipate a red versus blue election. It didn’t turn out that way but that was hardly mentioned.

By 2008, we were told to expect record voter turnout for the presidential election. Now we’re told that the predictions were wrong, the pictures of long lines, massive early voting, and massive registration increases all went to produce just about the same vote total as reported for 2004.

The 2004 vote total was 122 million compared to 105 million in 2000. We’re left with this question. With all the excitement and effort plus a huge funding advantage for Obama, how is it that the voters going to the polls were about equal in number for 2004 and 2008?

Given that Bush got 70% of the vote in Warren County in 2000, what's unusual with the fact that he got 72% in Warren County in 2004. How did that "far exceed expectations?" Whose expectations were these?

Socrates did an outstanding job in summarizing his finds, and bringing them to the attention of others. His main point of concern - that Hertzberg created ronpaulonline.com and then beckoned people its way while posing as "Navari," while at the same time ESI continued to claim it was a non-profit 501c(3) (which it was not, as demonstrated above), is correct, proven by the facts.

He is to be commended for his efforts, even though we didn't see eye-to-eye on some things.

Hi Bob,

I'm a long time reader of your reporting, first time posting, and a big fan of your work. I'm not trying to hijack your blogpost, but I personally have been somewhat in the middle of this Steven Hertzberg situation. I am not out for revenge against him, but I am curious about his internet activities. He was a prolific poster up until recently at a nutjob website called breakfornews.com. This is a convoluted story for a newbie, and I'm not trying to wear you out. But for someone who is supposed to be non-partisan, I find it funny how Steven astroturfed for Damshroder, most recently for Ron Paul, and how he minimized the 2004 Ohio exit polls.

Also, if one looks at his activities at the website just named{BFN}, one will be scratching their head, wondering if he might be part of an astroturfing company. I feel that I have a good sense of what happened, and how he was outed. Here are a few links to my forum which might help anyone at all interested in this development. While I did inform "John aka sluggo" of this story and had one email correspondence with Bev Harris, I have disassociated myself from supporting their camp- because Bev sold "clinton cigars" back in 1999, and I am also unsure of the full story of bbv.org, the fund raising aspect, etc.. I won't throw her completely under the bus based on the HBO movie and other info that seems good, but I have completely disassociated myself from "sluggo."

This is convoluted, but to all interested, I hope it helps.

Proof that Hertzberg was "Navari" at BreakForNews.com.

Big thread on Hertzberg as "Navari" and on the ESI aspect, etc..

Steven Hertzberg has emailed me, and demanded a retraction.

However, the basis of my post stands. ESI advertised itself as a 501c(3) until this week, but it wasn't a 501c(3) under SFFCIF for over a year. Therefore, if ESI collected any donations online while it was no longer a 501c(3), it did so under false pretenses.

Well, I have to give the "ConcernedOhioan" points for being clever. Sure wish I had that IP to see if he/she was really in Ohio ;)

Regardless, this has nothing to do with Bev Harris, and nothing to do with Brunner.

It has everything to do with Hertzberg. Amazingly, the Donate page at Hertzberg's ESI site was just changed, and now informs visitors that ESI shut down in 2006.

Of course, I already saved the Donate page a few days ago, which continued to claim ESI was a 501c(3) under SFFCIF. I mentioned this above, and to no surprise, I was right.

I cannot help but wonder if anyone donated to ESI since it ceased being a 501c(3) - at least as far back as August 2006, 4 months prior to Hertzberg's latest election-related postings at the site...also saved, of course.

Great summary article from Bob and Harvey.

Whacky, disconnected comment from John Dean/SluggoJD above.

His use of others' and his own website to vent and attempt proliferation of his own conjured-up meanness, and to promote infighting among true election reformers is the height of hypocrisy when so many are working so diligently toward honest elections.

Such savagery stands right up there with Bob and Harvey's well-described "terror imposed on the election registration process and the error perpetrated in the vote count" as means used by the power-hungry, of all stripes, to break down a humanly decent, democratic society.
It exemplifies both the causes of, and toxic growths from past election manipulations, and must be equally not tolerated.

SluggoJD appears to be trolling for new material for his "Bev Harris Enemies Analysis" website:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BevHarrisEnemiesAnalysis/

which he says he setup to "store evidence I've collected regarding the "BASHBEV.COM" team of Bev Harris bashers"

Ohioans, under our new SOS Brunner, are trying to improve our election system here, and folks like SluggoJD are simply a destructive force who appears to have little interest in real election reform.

Let's give Brunner the opportunity to get through the machine testing and see that report. If it's anything like Bowen's, we'll know what we need to do.

Hi Bob,

My name is John Dean, aka SluggoJD. You may have heard of me, due to my work on exposing Diebold's Robert Pelletier, aka therealrobp, as well as other stuff I've done, mostly behind the scenes.

I don't know if HTML works here or not, so I will just paste links.

I know that you know that Steven Hertzberg and ESI are dirty. Recently, some folks have tied Hertzberg to the name "Navari," and his online support for Ron Paul, via ronpaulonline.com. Hertzberg is definitely Navari, and owner of the Ron Paul site, but that's not why I am writing you.

I, myself, have been looking into other angles on Hertzberg, and I think it's time to open this up further, and seek help. On his ESI site, Hertzberg continues to claim that ESI is a 501c(3) under the SFFCIF program.

http://www.electionscience.org/about/contact_us_form?subject=Enquiry%20from%20foundation%20or%20other%20donor

And of course, he continues to ask for donations, as a 501c(3).

However, I have discovered via both current links and Internet Archive, that ESI has not been part of SFFCIF's 501c(3) programs since at least as far back as August 2006.

http://cifunds.org/store/

http://web.archive.org/web/20060823210001/www.cifunds.org/store/

And that means that, if he has collected any donations for election activities since August 2006, he's done it under false pretenses.

Perhaps you could help move this forward further.

Thanks,

John

How do we cope with the harsh realities of a Bush/Cheney/Rove dictatorial coup? Echo chamber, but soft and quiet, over and over and over. Do you have much of a conspiracy theory following? I think I might be a recent convert. I believed it would take too many people, too much coordinated effort. That is until a novel I read recently started playing out in the news. Is much truth said in….fiction? This one describes how one high-tech stalker infiltrates Miami Supervisor Cady Palmer’s election. Surprise, the governor’s behind it all. “Come the dark horse brightly.” Fiction, yes. But if Jeb rides in at the last minute I’m looking the author up for a palm reading.

[...] Feel free to read the whole thing here if you can stomach a nearly-impenetrable and logic-free collection of conspiracy theories. That article is by Bob Fitrakis, Green Party activist and chief complainant that George W. Bush stole the 2004 election by voter fraud in the state of Ohio. (An example of his writing is titled “How the GOP Stole America’s 2004 Election & Is Rigging 2008″, just to give you an idea.) [...]

Bob-
Beautifully said.

Did you know that the Antioch University Board of Trustees only recently discovered a $10 million dollar "error" had been made in the College's accounting by the former University CFO? This was the straw that broke the camel's back; the enrollment downturn from the implementation of the Renewal Commission plan had actually started to turn around, and the annual deficit could have been handled through emergency fundraising. This was announced to the faculty; apparently the previous CFO had been juggling funds to make the College appear more solvent and the Board finance committee did not adequately fulfill its oversight function. I haven't seen this in press anywhere; needless to say the Chancellor and Board are playing it down. I wonder which Ohio reporter will get this to press first?

http://www.rockridgenation.org/blog/archive/2007/05/25/the-framers-got-it-right-congress-is-the-decider

ACTION: Write to your Congresspersons and Senators and ask them to frame their Constitutional role as the Framers did. We suggest that you raise the following issues:

The Constitution provides Congress with the power to define the military agenda, including troop re-deployment and the establishment of timetables.

The role of the president is to carry out the agenda defined by Congress.

Congress must continuously assert its Constitutional power and responsibility.

Congress must not give in to the betrayal myth. The president was offered funding with timetables but he turned it down — he is the betrayer.

Congress must frame the matter as an issue of Constitutional authority

Congress must place the safety of the troops directly in the hands of the commander-in-chief, whose job is to carry out the agenda given by Congress, which includes protecting the safety of our troops.

Don't just write to your Congressperson. Write to the editors of your local newspapers. Flood the email boxes of the television and radio news shows, as well as national magazines. Send this call for action to your email lists. And write to progressive activist organizations like MoveOn, Democracy for America, and so on, to ask their memberships to support this action.

And don't do it just once. Repetition is the key to success. Keep it up until the next funding vote in September.

Huge thanks to these gentlemen for digging so deeply into this issue, especially to Bob who has unearthed enough dirt to touch the core of this wart on our universal elections.

I don't think, though, that we need to completely throw out electronics from our elections, yet. Computers are very good at faciltating voter interface, at being accessible to those less able, at tallying numbers quickly and efficiently.

As long as we have the backup, the security, and the ability to recount clearly and transparently, and an open faith in the quality and integrity of the product, computers in voting are just fine.

(I point out that in the United States, one voting system company with a good, utilitarian, secure, recountable, accessible product, with software available for review was available under HAVA: AccuPoll. There was no reason why every county in the United States did not buy it two years ago, and there is no reason why we shouldn't now. I have found no particular dirt on that company, although as a public company they do tend to let "just anyone" invest!)

At any rate, while some folks are advocating only optical scanners (the overwhelming majority are made by the same vendors whose products are causing so much consternation, and which tabulate with the same software as the touch-screen machines use), and while some folks are advocating only 100% hand-counted ballots, I think voters are not yet ready to back off from the computers. We just have to implement the systems appropriately, taking our time to get it right.

In other words, where we find corruption we should be certain to throw out the perpetrators without also tossing the currency. Their wrench may be the dripping murder weapon, but some other wrench will do the job nicely.

I am writing you at the suggestion of OSU professor Dr. Felicia Ross, who I met with this morning, regarding how I might go about finding an investigative journalist who might be interested in my ongoing 2.5+ year conflict with unknown (at least to me) law enforcement personnel. I am followed and watched 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, at home and at work, with my phone tapped, vehicle GPS'd, and email read. But I do not know the agency(s) involved, whether it is FBI or State Police or whatever, despite having made several focused attempts to open a communication channel with them.

I sent a brief email to Harvey Wasserman this past Sunday describing my situation and his reply yesterday was "intersting stuff...good luck!!!" Out of concern of losing my job, I am trying (for now anyway) to keep my identity private, although I did show Dr. Ross my driver's license. I can't send an email to you via this comment, but if you will visit my anonymous blog http://t4tat.blogspot.com, you will see all the details.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have. I can be emailed at T.FOR.TAT@GMAIL.COM. Thank you. "T"

Released Jan. 27, 2007:

OHIO 2004: 6.15% Kerry-Bush vote-switch found in probability study

Defining the vote outcome probabilities of wrong-precinct voting has revealed, in a sample of 166,953 votes (1 of every 34 Ohio votes), the Kerry-Bush margin changes 6.15% when the population is sorted by probable outcomes of wrong-precinct voting.

The Kerry to Bush 6.15% vote-switch differential is seen when the large sample is sorted by probability a Kerry wrong-precinct vote counts for Bush. When the same large voter sample is sorted by the probability Kerry votes count for third-party candidates, Kerry votes are instead equal in both subsets.

I'm glad I found your web site. I live in Cleveland, OH and may have been a purged registered voter in the November 2006 election.

I voted as a registered Republican in May, 2006 at my correct polling place and precinct without incident. I voted as a Republican only to vote against Ken Blackwell in the primary. I am usually a Democratically leaning independent voter.

I received in Oct, 2006, an official election mailing stating my correct name, address, polling place and precinct number. I showed up to vote on November 07, 2007 with this mailing in hand only to be told I wasn't registered and needed to fill out a provisional ballot! I told the people at my precinct I had no faith that my provisional ballot would be counted and left without voting!

I went home and made several phone calls to voter hotlines, jounalists and others who told me to go back and vote with the provisional ballot! My story was published by AP in many newspapers and on the radio! One website with this story is http:www. onnnews.com/?sec=&story=sites/onn/content/pool/200611/411468068.html

I went back to my polling place and voted with a provisional ballot!
Several days later, I phoned the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections and asked whether my provisional ballot had been counted! I was told it would take some time to determine whether my ballot had been counted or not.

I was tired of all the run around so I went to my Congressman's office with all the information and a photocopy of my "official voter's guide". A woman from Dennis Kucinich's office told me she'd look into this matter for me.

Later that day, I received a phone call from Congressman Kucinich's office stating that yes, my provisional ballot had been counted but I'd need to re-register to vote!

I was glad to hear this news until February 02, 2007 when I received a letter from the League of Woman Voters stating that " Public records at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections indicate that you cast a provisional ballot in the General Election held on November 7, 2006. Those records also indicate that your provisonal ballot was not counted because the Cuyahoga Count Board of Elecions did not show you to be a registered voter at the time of the election."

Needless to say, I'm confused and upset with this news! I can't help think that my purging from the registered to unregistered ranks was part of some greater maliciousness!! At the very least, my unregistering was clerical and administrative ineptitude but I can't help but wonder what is going on!!

I contacted the League of Women Voters and Congressman Kucinich's office yesterday hoping someone can help me sort out whether it's possible to confirm that my provisional vote was counted or not. I'd also like to know why my vote wasn't counted if this is the case.

Any comments or suggestions that could help me find out about my provisional ballot would be appreciated. I'd like to know whether others are having problems verifying provisional ballots in Ohio?

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share my electoral frustrations. I'm glad there's a place to go!

Thanks for this fact-intensive analysis. THere's some heavy, I think, political fallout from these convictions as well. Much detail here <strong>http://tinyurl.com/2wtuqp</strong>

The public was heavily reassured that the bipartisan boards of elections were a solid safeguard for our elections. Not only did this ignore the obvious deadlock at 2 Dems and 2 Reps with Blackwell getting the tiebreaking vote, and even the Dems more or less serving at Blackwell's pleasure, but as the Cuyahoga convictions prove, ONCE ELECTIONS OFFICIALS ARE COMMITTED to their first-announced results, many of them would rather commit felonies and rig recounts than admit they were wrong, incompetent in finding fraud, or guilty of fraud themselves, or even just risk being in a media fishbowl of scrutiny and publicity for a while. Rigging the recounts looked awfully attractive at that point, and Blackwell winked a lot too.

So, while multi-partisan elections officials who are watching the FIRST count like hawks can be a reliable check and balance, those very same elections officials are at serious risk of being lackadaisacal and unmotivated (at best) and grossly negligent and intentionally criminal (at worst) in terms of mis-executing recount (and "audit") jobs.

Every "audit" legislation I can think of right now has the government elections officials auditing THEMSELVES. Sheesh. The emperor has no clothes at so many different levels it is simply astounding. And so, in CA like San Diego, they select the "random" precincts through Diebold computers (!) or through dice before the first count is even finished, but in either case, they know before the first count is even finished which 99% of the precincts can be completely faulty or rigged and it won't be detected.

After the first results are announced, only the public can really do the job as watchdogs because they don't have a large vested interest like all the elections officials do in their reputation for doing "good work" and in their desire to have a real nice Thanksgiving week with family...

Wed Dec 20, 2006 6:46 am (PST)
In his article posted at <a title="Thanks Richard" href="http://web.northnet.org/minstrel/ohio.2006.htm" target="_blank">http://web.northnet.org/minstrel/ohio.2006.htm</a> Richard Hayes Phillips called attention to suspicious numbers of undervotes/overvotes for the US Senate candidates reported by 17 Ohio counties.

<strong>UNOFFICIAL RESULTS IN SEVENTEEN OHIO COUNTIES CANNOT BE RIGHT

Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D.
December 7, 2006

ABSTRACT: In the November 7, 2006 election in Ohio there were 350,669 more
ballots cast than the number of votes counted for United States Senator.
In 16 counties there were 268,987 uncounted votes, or 19.46% of ballots cast,
compared to 82,957, or 2.99%, in 71 other counties. Cuyahoga County alone
accounted for 148,928 uncounted votes, or 26.48% of ballots cast in the county,
and 42.47% of the statewide total of uncounted ballots. In Marion County there
were 1,275 more votes counted for United States Senator than the reported number
of ballots cast, which is an impossibility. If the rate of uncounted ballots
in the 17 suspect counties had been about 3%, as was the case elsewhere in the
state, there would have been about 42,000 uncounted ballots instead of 269,000.
This indicates that 227,000 votes may have been lost by the touch screen voting
machines, which were utilized in all 17 of the suspect counties.

NOTE: This analysis is based upon unofficial results. If the official results
should reduce these discrepancies, the question will remain as to how the
unofficial results could have been so erroneous in the first place.

In the 2006 general election, according to the official website of Ohio
Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell, there were 4,177,498 ballots cast in
the State of Ohio. Of these, only 3,831,716, or 91.72%, contained votes for
Governor, and only 3,826,829, or 91.61%, contained votes for United States
Senate. These numbers create the appearance of undervote (or overvote) rates
of 8.28% and 8.39%, respectively, in the two most hotly contested statewide
races on the ballot. When the unofficial election results are examined
county by county, there is a strikingly abnormal distribution of undervotes
and overvotes. I have chosen the United States Senate race to examine in
detail because there were only two candidates on the ballot (and one write-in
candidate), which makes the mathematical analysis simpler than for the
Governor's race, in which there were four candidates on the ballot (and two
write-in candidates). A similar analysis could be done, and should be done,
or the Governor's race, and for all races in which the unofficial results
were very close.

The methodology was simple. The percentage of undervotes and overvotes for
each county was derived by fifth grade mathematics. The total number of
votes counted for the candidates combined was subtracted from the number of
ballots cast. The remainder is the number of uncounted ballots, or
undervotes plus overvotes. This number was divided by the number of ballots
cast to determine the percentage of ballots left uncounted in each county.
The complete data set for all 88 counties is appended to this paper.

There are 88 counties in Ohio. Of these 88 counties, according to unofficial
results posted by J. Kenneth Blackwell, 71 counties had rates of undervotes
and overvotes ranging from 0.88% (in Greene County) to 6.90% (in Holmes
County). In 62 of these 71 counties, the percentages were tightly clustered
between 2.00% and 4.50%. The rate in these 71 counties combined was 2.99%.

In 16 of the other 17 counties, including 4 of the 10 most populous counties
in the State of Ohio, the percentages of undervotes and overvotes were
clearly anomalous, ranging from 11.91% (in Montgomery County) to 26.48% (in
Cuyahoga County), with a combined rate of 19.46%, or six and one-half times
the rate in the rest of the state. Just four counties -- Cuyahoga, Lucas,
Montgomery and Stark -- accounted for 219,332 undervotes and overvotes, or
62.55% of the statewide total of 350,669. Cuyahoga County alone accounted
for 148,928 undervotes and overvotes, or 42.47% of the statewide total. It
is difficult to believe that more than one in four voters in Cuyahoga County
could not decide between Sherrod Brown and Mike DeWine.

UNOFFICIAL RESULTS: UNITED STATES SENATE

16 counties 1,382,455 1,113,568 268,987 19.46%
71 counties 2,775,090 2,692,133 82,957 2.99%

In Marion County, Blackwell reported 19,853 total votes cast, and 21,128
votes counted for the United States Senate candidates -- an overcount of
1,275 votes. These are known as "phantom votes," because they are
apparitions, with no explainable origin. There can never be more votes
counted for an office than the number of persons voting in the election.

Note that there is no county falling between Holmes County (6.90%) and
Montgomery County (11.91%). The counties listed above are clearly anomalous.
The unofficial results cannot be right. And, of course, the unofficial
results in Marion County are impossible.

Note also that all 17 counties listed above utilized touch screen voting
machines, known in the trade as Direct Recording Electronic (DRE). 31 of 88
Ohio counties utilized optical scanners, and none of them had this problem.
Data on voting technology utilized in 2006 by each Ohio county is displayed
on a map provided by www.yourvotecountsohio.org

A word of caution is in order. In the 2005 general election in Ohio, several
counties reported incorrect figures for total ballots cast. The false
numbers were derived by counting absentee ballots twice, as the Diebold
tabulators were programmed to do. However, there is no evidence that this is
the cause of the abnormally high numbers of undervotes and overvotes reported
in 16 counties in the 2006 general election. The combined totals of absentee
and provisional ballots are reported by Blackwell for each county, and in no
case are these numbers anywhere near what would be required to account for
the discrepancies.

To the contrary, unofficial voter turnout in these 17 counties was 54.35%,
compared to 52.21% in the other 71 counties of Ohio. That is not much of a
difference. There were 1,402,408 ballots cast in these 17 counties. If the
rate of undervotes and undervotes had been about 3%, as was the case
elsewhere in the state, there would have been about 42,000. Instead there
were 267,712 (or 268,987 if one takes into account the 1,275 phantom votes
in Marion County).

This raises the disturbing possibility that some 227,000 votes were lost
by touch screen voting machines in Ohio. Surely this merits a full-scale
investigation. Whether or not this "affected the outcome," a phrase
generally intended to mean who won and who lost the election, is beside
the point. If 227,000 votes were not counted, the outcome was affected.

In his article posted at http://web.northnet.org/minstrel/ohio.2006.htm Richard Hayes Phillips called attention to suspicious numbers of undervotes/overvotes for the US Senate candidates reported by 17 Ohio counties.

UNOFFICIAL RESULTS IN SEVENTEEN OHIO COUNTIES CANNOT BE RIGHT

                         *     *     *     *     *

I have chosen the United States Senate race to examine in
detail because there were only two candidates on the ballot (and one write-in
candidate), which makes the mathematical analysis simpler than for the
Governor’s race, in which there were four candidates on the ballot (and two
write-in candidates). A similar analysis could be done, and should be done,
or the Governor’s race, and for all races in which the unofficial results
were very close.

Just four counties — Cuyahoga, Lucas,
Montgomery and Stark — accounted for 219,332 undervotes and overvotes, or
62.55% of the statewide total of 350,669. Cuyahoga County alone accounted
for 148,928 undervotes and overvotes, or 42.47% of the statewide total. It
is difficult to believe that more than one in four voters in Cuyahoga County
could not decide between Sherrod Brown and Mike DeWine.

In Marion County, Blackwell reported 19,853 total votes cast, and 21,128
votes counted for the United States Senate candidates — an overcount of
1,275 votes. These are known as “phantom votes,” because they are
apparitions, with no explainable origin. There can never be more votes
counted for an office than the number of persons voting in the election.

Marion 19,853 21,128 -1,275 -6.42% touch screen

Note that there is no county falling between Holmes County (6.90%) and
Montgomery County (11.91%). The counties listed above are clearly anomalous.
The unofficial results cannot be right. And, of course, the unofficial
results in Marion County are impossible.

Note also that all 17 counties listed above utilized touch screen voting
machines, known in the trade as Direct Recording Electronic (DRE). 31 of 88
Ohio counties utilized optical scanners, and none of them had this problem.
Data on voting technology utilized in 2006 by each Ohio county is displayed
on a map provided by http://www.yourvotecountsohio.org

Whether or not this “affected the outcome,” a phrase
generally intended to mean who won and who lost the election, is beside
the point. If 227,000 votes were not counted, the outcome was affected.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Bob & Harvey & all of you who are making a huge difference in our broken country. You have thousands of supporters worldwide. Stay strong and [hehe] STAY THE COURSE!!

I hope you will gain some power after the election so you can go forward and further with your lawsuits - here's hoping we can bring the criminals to justice.

Cheers!

Right on Bob and Harvey

Everyone, please go here and sign this petition to be sent to newspapers and congresspersons. We have to scream as one.

The Mexican election was a model for what is coming after Tuesday?
I hope we as HONEST U.S. citizens do not allow this to happen to OUR democracy. OK Folks? It IS happening.

http://www.usalone.com/cgi-bin/petition.cgi?pnum=544

“Therefore, the elections results from Tuesday's count, can and will be investigated by these same aforementioned citizens. The U.S. Government or the Justice Department have not previously investigated the flawed elections of the past 6 years nor have shown any interest in doing so and are complicit in the actual obstruction of true Justice and aiding and abetting in the theft of Democracy in the U.S.”

Would you advocate voting absentee since the electronic machines are still so sketchy? I got a request form in the mail that I can send back for an absentee voting form and it seems like it'd be a much better idea. Not that I like trusting my vote to the US Postal Service, but I'd rather them have it than Diebold...

Please <a href="mailto:lrobeson@gmail.com" rel="nofollow">let me know</a>, thanks!!

How many 21 year-old males are there in Ohio?

I ask because according to the 14th Amendment to the Constitution:

<blockquote>Amendment XIV

...

Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. <B>But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States</B>, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, <B>is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state</B>, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, <B>or in any way abridged</B>, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, <B>the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.</B></blockquote>

Seems from what we know about people having their right to vote in MANY ways abridged, Ohio should lose electoral votes. Has anyone considered pursuing this?

Welcome back! I was afraid you had been kidnapped by some rightwing gremlins.

As for the state media - what do you think they're here for? Cover elections completely and honestly? Wow you must be living in the distant past! That era ended in 2000! Now they just print whatever the politicians say - and then only if they're Republicans who worship at the corporate altar!

People were dead in the streets for lack of attention, in this, the world's richest and most caring nation.

I had a hard time looking any African American in the eye after this had happened. I am ashamed of the deliberate attempt at racial cleansing this administration had shown by their obvious apathy and lack of real attention to the threat before and after this natural disaster.

Ken Blackwell, we hold you accountable for this administration's actions because it was you that was ultimately responsible for suppressing the vote in Ohio in 2004.

You blatantly obfuscated the process and now, it seems, because of a continued precinct by precinct, county by county review of ballots, handed Bush and the corporate hacks, the keys that did not belong to you.

Don't you associate yourself with the hacks that murder, rape, and exploit the citizenry of this country and the world?

Yes, you have religion. What religion, I don't know. Could it be Satan?

The point is "modern" is that we as a "democracy" are limited nowadays to the corporate exclusion of alternate candidates. There is no mention of anything. Not even as a public service, the MSM (mainstream media) has a virtual blockade on all but the Dems and Repubs.

So essentially, we have a Corporate Dictatorship, catering to and denying access to anyone outspoken about the truth (both present and historical) and the powers that be.

American naivete, like nostalgia, ain't what it used to be.

Your argument that denying you to the debate harms the marketplace of ideas would have merit if you actually ever expressed any of these allegedly "innovative" ideas.

It's less than 80 days until the election, and neither on this blog or on your campaign website have you expressed your plan on health, job creation, urban renewal, education, making college more affordable, agriculture, crime, or really anything other than your war against President Bush.

And which part of Strickland's platform makes him sound like a Republican? His plan for universal health care? Or his early childhood education initiative? Or his energy policy to promote more energy efficient and green technologies?

As always, you offer only empty platitudes, name calling, and no ideas of your own. Frankly, I don't blame you're exclusion since you have yet to articulate your own platform while you insist on criticizing everyone elses. The only thing you have publicly promised "bringing Ohio's National Guard troops currently serving in Iraq" Ohio has been revealed to be a disingenious and empty promise.

You aren't the only candidate running who is against the war, either. Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown voted agains the war. Strickland has been a vocal critic of the Administration regarding the war. Within the past week, he applauded the federal court's decision to declare the NSA's warrantless wiretap program as unconstitutional. So for you to post that it's not clear where Strickland stand on the war is yet another lie you've presented to the Ohio progressive community.

If you recall the Jonestown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown massacre, compare that to what has happened in our country and the lack of outrage today. Was Jonestown a prelude to the W DEATH CULT?

Instead of working for peace, this administration has sought only war in the guise of the "Christian" ethic. May God have mercy on them.

Persevering against the lies and absolute corruption of the present administration takes more than just passive observation. We as a nation should speak out against this CURRENT ongoing atrocity called the U.S. government.

Did we not learn anything from Jim Jones? The comparison is that a "religious" leader has lead us away from the truth on a grand scale.

Dave,

Are you sure that $9.75 is the "living wage"? I read over a year ago that it was over $10 an hour then. But you're right. The $6.85 is a pathetic raise! I'll vote for it because it's an increase, but I wish we were voting to adopt a "living wage."

What about subsidized college tuition? And we don't need a 6.85 minimum wage---we need a living wage, ie. $9.75/hr.

This is a good way for Greens, Libertarians, Constitutionalists, and any other small parties out there to build name recognition through a consistent ballot presence until they get to the point where they're bringing in enough votes to qualify as an "official" party. This bill by Rep. Trakas is a welcome solution, and I hope all readers will lobby their local representatives to co-sponsor it and pass it.

The other piece of the puzzle, of course, is media exposure. When people are wary of candidates they've never heard of, what they mean is that they've been conditioned to only trust those who are covered in the news. If every story about Blackwell's campaign didn't also mention Strickland, how many people outside his district would know who he is? This is a serious problem for grassroots candidates at all levels, and the media love upholding their end of the catch-22. We need a good way to address this with the gatekeepers in the press, TV, and radio without alienating them completely.

William Bill Moss was perhaps the most honest, patient, dedicated person I had the honor of meeting. Everytime I called him for advice, his wise console was aways a blessing, and always correct. He quoted bible verses to back up his advice to me.

I ask myself many times since his passing, why were we so determined not to heed his advice. So we suffer, and our children are suffering, because we refused to fight for them. We left the fight for Bill Moss, even though the children were ours.

Who is fighting for your children now?

What Bob is saying is the logical extension to what people are saying about Gore's dire warnings in his new movie. We must start thinking Green and green. Mass transit is essential, but the oil lobby will fight it to the death.

The only fraud here, Bob, is your opinion. I hope you're not selling this garbage about Ken Blackwell as fact.

I read the piece on Blackwell in Columbus' Other Paper and thought the writer did an excellent job in making the point that not all African Americans were against him. When I learned that East Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer represents a city that's 94 percent African American, and that he's a Democrat willing to step forward to support "Brother" Ken, I had to learn more about him.

This guy is no fly by night. On checking, Brother Brewer told me he wants to send Democrats a message that Ted Strickland's candidacy is a slap in the face to loyal Black Democratic voters. He said the Democratic Party could have pressured Strickland to stay out of the race and ensured a head up competition between Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman and Blackwell. Racist Strickland new that if Blackwell won the primary against Jim Petro and Betty Montgomery, that there were some whites Ohioans who would never vote for a Black candidate. He said Strickland was calculating on picking up the white racist vote and the blind support of Black voters he knew would blindly support him regardless of his hidden motivation for even stepping into the race. He said Strickland supporters showed their disrespect further when he ignored an opportunity to make Cuyahoga County Peter Lawson Jones his running mate, and when he backed another racist, Chris Redfern, for state party chairman. Redfern and his people totally disrespected U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin during the state caucus to select another party boss. The pro-Black East Cleveland mayor told me he's not excited about supporting another white male ticket in a party that does nothing but give lip service to diversity, so he's going whole hog with Brother Ken to teach them a lesson.

I asked him about whether or not he wants a job with Blackwell's administration and he laughed and asked me "where did I get that bullshit from?" I told him it came from Fraudbuster Bob's website and he said, "Who's fraubuster Bob?"

How can our forefathers in Central Ohio see fit to have mass transit to Zanesville from Columbus and today with our technology and improved machining deny our citizens this option?

On the right, mass transit is equated with socialism but they don't object to funding our highways to the tune of billions of our tax dollars that are wasteful. What is the difference?

Can we smile at someone on the highway or is that considered socialism? :P

Regarding Intelligent Design in science...
Philosophy is SCIENCE, but it is not biological science.
Intelligent Design is a metaphysical and ontological scientific theory, not a Biological theory.

Therefore: Wanna teach Intelligent Design in schools, fund philosophy classes.
